Product Description

Robbie the Reindeer is as short as many of the made-for-TV classics that have preceded it, like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but so much action, zippy dialogue, and witty visual puns have been packed into its 29-minute running time that you'd swear it was longer. For this reason, it also stands up to repeat viewing better than some of the more straightforward programs of recent years, although it is directed toward a slightly older audience--age 10 and up--due to some sexual innuendo. Whether Robbie will become a holiday perennial in the U.S. is yet to be seen, but he appears to have won the hearts of the U.K. and shares a lineage with another stop-motion favorite, Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Robbie just happens to be Rudolph's son, and Pop is keen to see his lovable--but lazy--progeny follow in his famous hoof prints. Adults may get a kick out of the fact that the story line was actually inspired more by Rocky than by Rudolph. As in Rocky, there's a supportive female (Donner) and a crusty old trainer (Old Jingle). Together they help Robbie get in shape for the Reindeer Games, where he'll have the chance to show Santa whether he has the right stuff or not. Fans of Aardman Animations should appreciate the detailed animation and clever humor. The cream of Britain's comic crop provides the voices, including Jane Horrocks (Absolutely Fabulous) as Donner. Pop singer Robbie Williams narrates the story, and Mark Knopfler provides the music. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Robbie the Reindeer...

Review by K. Hammill, 2010-02-02

I do NOT like this video. It is not for children but is a vulgar story with animals portrayed as naked humans.

cute but inconsistent

Review by S. Griner, 2010-01-09

We love Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run, so I had to give this a try as a Christmas present. If you enjoy the British accents of these other movies, don't just take the defaults on the DVD. Instead, go to the options, and change the voices to the originals.

Now for the stories... The DVD has two of them. Hooves of Fire was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed the personaities of the reindeers. Lost Tribe was less interesting and had a weaker story, in my opinion.

Funniest Little Christmas Special Ever

Review by Gary L. Jones, 2010-01-07

Aimed at a grown-up's sense of humor but still enjoyable for a kid, Robbie the Reindeer is hilarious. The claymation style of animation helps to bring a touch of surrealism into the humor. Having seen the original British version first, that is the one I love. The voice cast made it come to life. I saw the American version (no offense to Ben Stiller and the other actors but they just didn't fit) once and it seemed as though the actors were just reading a script over the film. There was no emotion, no inflection...well, alright, there was but it was so lame, I couldn't stand it.

very funny stuff, better in British.

Review by K. MIller, 2009-12-30

These two short films are a bit thin on plot perhaps, but they are well worth watching just for the sight gags and throw-away lines. The grown-ups in our house enjoyed them as much as the kids did.

Now, this is important: don't just put it in and hit "play," or you will get the re-dubbed U.S. version. The American voices are not nearly as funny as the original British/Irish ones. Work your way through the options menu and choose "U.K. voices."

All in all, Robbie is not quite up to Wallace and Gromit standards, but it's close. This DVD is a nice holiday complement to Charlie Brown and the Grinch.

SO funny!

Review by Marcia M. Tomlinson, 2009-09-28

This movie is a riot ... adults will be rolling in laughter from the double entendres while the kids are having just as much fun watching the so-called story line! I really recommend it.
